The Marian Library was established in 1943 by Marianists at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The library contains a comprehensive collection of printed materials on Mary and aims to promote study, research, and devotion. The library maintains a website, The Mary Page, which may be found at

Scope and Contents

The collection of Marian devotional scapulars primarily includes the traditional scapular: a double image attached to a single piece of cloth and suspended from a cord. Some of the scapulars are non-traditional or handmade. Most of the scapulars range in size, but most of them are approximately 2" x 1". The largest is 4" x 4.5" and the smallest, approximately .5" x 1".

The most well represented and abundant types of scapulars in the collection include the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Green Scapular, The Red Scapular of the Passion, and the Blue Scapular of the Immaculate Conception. Many of the Brown and Green scapulars include brochures; a few of the brochures indicate that that particular scapular has been blessed. The largest scapular in the collection (4" x 4.5") is violet in color, depicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and includes documentation and correspondence.
