Scope and Contents

This collection contains a variety of devotional materials on the Sacred Heart (also known as the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus) including holy cards, in memorium cards, prayer leaflets and novenas, foreign language prayer leaflets, promises of the Sacred Heart, badges, handmade devotional objects, pamphlets, membership cards, and printed ephemera. The collection contains a variety of artistic representations of the Sacred Heart.

The artistic styles span from unique or handmade representations to images from popular culture. Most of the materials are printed, but other mediums, such as hand-painted items are included. The collection contains portraits and icons of Jesus with the Sacred Heart, the Heart alone, as well as the Heart depicted with an individual or in a setting.

The textual materials in the collection include prayers in English, French, German, Italian, and a small selection of other Indo-European languages. The text materials also include novenas and Promises of the Sacred Heart. The collection primarily represents materials used for personal or private devotions.
