Financial records, meeting minutes, correspondence, election records and other records documenting the activities of the Association of Amherst Students, the official student government body of Amherst College. Historical Note

The Association of Amherst Students (AAS) is the student government that serves the Amherst College community. Its purpose is to represent the student body and be a liaison between students and administration. It consists of three branches -- legislative, judicial, and executive, as laid out in the AAS Constitution. A President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Judiciary Council Chair serve as the Executive Branch. A 32-member Student Senate makes up the Legislative Branch. Finally, the judicial branch is comprised of the Judiciary Council, headed by the Judiciary Council Chair.

The AAS represents the voice of the student body. It makes recommendations to the administration based on student input. The AAS also supports student programming such as clubs and organizations. It approves new clubs, funds student activities, and puts on events at school. AAS members serve on a wide variety of student/faculty committees, share student perspective with faculty members, and effect major change at Amherst College.

Note: the Student Finance Committee was renamed the Budgetary Committee ca. 2003. Thus "Pre-BC" in this inventory refers to activities of the Student Finance Committee.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

Invoices, bank statements, budget statements, tax forms and other financial records relating to the activities and monetary allocations of the Association of Amherst Students, the official student government body of Amherst College. Also, meeting minutes and correspondence, as well as election records, including candidate statements, petitions and ballots.

Access to boxes 1-6 is restricted to members of the AAS Executive Board for reasons of privacy. Otherwise there are no restrictions on access.

Requests for permission to publish material from the records should be directed to the Archives and Special Collections. It is the responsibility of the researcher to identify and satisfy the holders of all copyrights.

Accruals are expected every 3-5 years.
