The Russian Department at Smith College began as the Polish and Russian Languages Department in 1941. By the 1942-1943 academic year, it was named the Slavic Languages Department. Since 1948-1949, it has been known as the Russian Language and Literature Department.
The Russian Department records contain materials describing the department, its courses, and its Russian Club. Types of materials include black and white photographs, course syllabi, mid-year and final exam questions, news releases, and newspaper articles.
The records are open for research according to the regulations of the Smith College Archives without any additional restrictions.
