<head>Historical Note</head>
<p>The Russian Department at Smith College began as the Polish and Russian Languages Department in 1941. By the 1942-1943 academic year, it was named the Slavic Languages Department. Since 1948-1949, it has been known as the Russian Language and Literature Department.
