         <abstract label="Abstract:" encodinganalog="520$a">Teacher and Peace Corps volunteer.  The Sommer Papers consist primarily of letters to her family written during her service for the Peace Corps as a teacher in the Philippines. The letters also document her training in Hawaii and at Northern Illinois University. Included are reports to the Peace Corps, correspondence to and from others about her work, and itineraries of her travels in Asia during and after her Peace Corps duty.

      <bioghist id="bioghist">
         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p> Jane Sommer graduated from Radcliffe College in 1964. She served with the Peace Corps in the Philippines from 1964 to 1966, training elementary school teachers. In 1967, Sommer was appointed field director of the Seven College Conference Program for Admission and Scholarships.  From 1973 to 1977, Sommer held the position of Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey.  From 1977 to 1980, she was the Cooperative Education Coordinator at North Adams State College, in Massachusetts.  Sommer took the position of Associate Director in the Career Development Office of Smith College in 1980 and still hold the position.  From 1999 to 2000, she was also the Interim Associate Dean for International Study at Smith College.</p>
