Abby Shute Merchant was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1882; graduated Smith College 1904; later studied at Radcliffe, 1913-15. Editor for Craftsman, 1909; wrote for Sheet and Smith, 1909-12. Part-owner, the Prairie Playhouse, Galesburg (Ill), 1915-16, one of the first rural regional theatres using repertory techniques in community setting. Playwright 1912-40. She died in 1982.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

Papers consist of 7 plays in typescript, some with explanatory notes. Titles included are: "The New Englander" (1912), "Irish Dew" (1920), "Love and Lucy" (1927), "The Dramatist" (1928), "Burden of Beauty" (1932), "The Unbent Twig" (1940), and "Love Story" (n.d.).
