    <head>Biographical Note</head>
       <p>Mary Angela Holbrook was born in South Braintree, Massachusetts on 12 February 1839 to Moses Holbrook and Amanda White Holbrook. She was the youngest of their six surviving children.  Moses Holbrook was listed as a farmer in the 1850 census on Granite St. Near Pond St , east side, in South Braintree.  After completing her education, Holbrook taught school in Quincy and South Braintree.  In 1869, she married Edward Seabury Edwards, a dentist, with whom she had two children, Edward and Pamelia.</p>

      <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
       <p>This collection is comprised of Mary Angella Holbrook's diaries (3 vols., 1861-65), containing her observations on daily life, on teaching in South Braintree and Quincy, Massachusetts, on religion, and a few comments on current events.  There are also photographs of Mary Holbrook (Powers) and her husband, Edward S. Powers; a few poems and clippings; a guestbook from the family's summer cottage; and Edward S. Powers's school exercise book.  There is also a brief family history, and transcriptions of the diaries and poems (on CD-Rom).</p>
