         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Mark Antony Lower was born in Heathfield, England in July 1813, the son of Richard Lower.  He was a school master from the 1830's through the 1860's, including 32 years at Lewes.  He was a founding member of the Sussex Archaeological Society and the author of "Patronymica Britannica" and of several scholarly books on the history of Sussex.  He died in London in 1876.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>Two lectures read at the Mechanics Institute in Lewes, Sussex, England on the famous Bayeux tapestry, which depicts the conquest of England by William the Conquerer.  With this is included a "Specimen of the Bayeux Tapestry from Dr. Bruce's work", i.e., John Collingwood Bruce's book "The Bayeux Tapestry Elucitated] and a transcript of the lectures made by David Hill.</p>
