Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Roxane Hill Hughes papers consist of a diary, correspondence, writings, newspaper articles and photographs mostly documenting a trip to Europe that she took in 1960. The diary dates from June 20-August 20, 1960 when Hughes took a trip with Mount Holyoke College classmates Linda Loranger (later, Linda Stranger), Joyce Rose (later, Joyce L. Crossley), and Nancy Desmond (later, Nancy D. Cox). Each entry in the diary is dated and the country that Hughes is writing about is listed at the top of the page. The women visited the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, England and Scotland. Hughes discusses daily activities and describes places visited, people met, social life, food and drink. Correspondence includes postcards that Hughes sent to her family and letters from Scandinavian Student Travel Service. Also included are two letters from "Roger" whom she met on the trip and who stayed in touch with her until 1964. The writings consist of a newspaper article that Hughes wrote about the ways in which boys and girls learn math differently and about different teaching systems. Biographical information consists of two newspaper articles, one announcing Hughes participation in the trip to Europe and one announcing her marriage. Photographs include a formal portrait from about 1957 as well as college snapshots of events at the time of her graduation in 1961, including the Laurel Parade and the Commencement Ceremony.
