Scope and Contents of the Collection

Nearly two-thirds of this town treasurer's account book is devoted to a monthly accounting of money paid to the families of Civil War volunteers, beginning in April 1861 and carrying through 1881. The list begins on page 225 and continues to page 253, covering 1861 to March 1863. It then returns to page 224 and runs in reverse order to page 109, covering 1863 to 1881. The payments were made by R.P. Kingman, North Bridgewater (later Brockton), Massachusetts town treasurer.

Also included in the book are the accounts of school district expenses and revenues for the years 1858 to 1869, for the 14 school districts in North Bridgewater. These accounts are covered on pages 1-46, and pages 57-58. Pages 47-56 and 59-100 have been cut out of the volume. The school accounts include teacher salaries, accounts for supplies, and accounts with textbook publishers such as Harper & Bros. and Heath & Co.

At the bottom of some of the pages of school accounts are listings of salaries paid town officers including the Superintendent of Streets, Overseer of the Poor, city clerk, and city treasurer. Pages 101-109 also have information on salaries paid to the Police Department, although they are undated.
