The collection consists
of manuscript materials, sound recordings, and photographs documenting the
performance of French-Canadian music and dance, Polish-style polka, old-time
bluegrass music, Bengali music, bluegrass music, vallenato-style Colombian
music, and gospel music recorded live outdoors on Neptune Plaza in front of the
Library of Congress.
Scope and Content
The 1989 Neptune Plaza Concert Series Collection consists of
manuscript and print materials, audio recordings, and graphic materials that
document the 1989 concert series sponsored by the American Folklife Center. The
annual series, which began in 1977, features the presentation of folk
traditions from many cultures. The concerts take place on the Neptune Plaza at
the front of the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress between April
and September. Adverse weather conditions sometimes force the concerts indoors.
The 1989 series was produced with the assistance of the National Council for
the Traditional Arts. Concerts were broadcast live on WAMU-FM, hosted by Dick
Spottswood.

Appendix A: Dance Content
Concert
Description
Quebec Traditional Music and Dance
Raynald Ouellet, Marcel Messervier, and
Normand Lagault present traditional French-Canadian music and dance from
Quebec. They describe and play music for various dance forms, such as
galopes, the clog waltz, and a broom dance.
Legault demonstrates la gigue, a distinctively
Québécoise form of solo step dancing. Print

Eddie Blazonczyk and the Versatones
The group presents Polish-style polka music
to which audience members dance. Print materials contain information on the
